about

Sample Minds emerged around 2011 playing sporadic events associated with Tortuga Studios, Dirty Shirlows, Sunday Dub Club and various warehouse events in Sydney. The band is Pumps on Drums, Sid Sidlow on Guitar and Peter Strong a.k.a Mashy P on electronic production and guitar. Starting off as a kind of sample mash up band the 3 piece has now incorporated dub, reggae, post punk, ambient and space rock sounds into the eclectic mix.

Echo Clash is a agit-dub infused journey through various styles sometimes spitting out a social and environmental media and news samples, at times meandering to meditative dub driven down tempo ambient soundscapes and then ramping it up into global bass, doof infused post punk and reggae jam.

This 12 track album draws on music developed since about 2018 but was finally pulled together in the locked down winter of 2020 on Aboriginal lands in Sydney. Various physically distanced recording sessions compiled the live drums of Pumps and Guitar/Sitar effects of Sid Sidlow to Mashy P’s electronic music production.

The name Echo Clash was inspired by the Roland RE-201 Space Echo Tape delay/reverb type effects which has been recreated digitally bombing the production into it’s echoing clash sound.
The name is also inspired by current times we are living. We live in a time where a kind of global civil war of words and belief systems has lead to giant echo chambers of thought. These Echo chambers clash on social media and in the streets. The mainstream conservative think tank is in a state of decay, the future liveability of our planet hangs in the balance. The great tragedy of the Corona Virus crisis in 2020 in a way is one of the only things to slow down the capitalist machine that continues to munch on resources as it insists on producing economic growth for the few by exploiting increasingly finite resources. COVID has also shone a spotlight on the weaknesses of our systems of human organisation that put profit for the few above the well being of the many.

A global consciousness has emerged since the explosion of the Internet challenging the old model of broadcast media that tells us how things are or should be to benefit the few. In the world wide web cauldron vested interest fake news rubs up against well-researched critique, tin foil hat conspiracy theory ebbs and flows against challenges to the distribution of power and privilege secured by years of colonial exploits and genocide.
Art and music is one of the mediums that can help lead to a harmonious human society, grassroots progressive political and social campaigns can cement more sustainable and equal way of living but the battle is on. There needs to be a coordinated global uprising against inequality, earth destruction and the 0.01% who are determined to destroy our future to keep their power and privilege in tact. Sample Minds hopes to be a small part of the people power movement to take us to a better place.
