The Tipping Point

Mashy P and The Sample Minds

This album represents the best of music I've made since about 2010. It's a body of work that spans 7 years. I started making music in the early 1990's as well as being involved in Sydney's vibrant music and politically active cultural landscape, from Vibe Tribe to Ohms Not Bombs, Reclaim the Streets, Earthdream, Channel Parties and more. In 2016 I released a documentary called “Do It Ourselves Culture”, the whole package includes 2 times 2 hour films plus a bunch of extras and double album of music. It looks into the waveform of energy in Sydney and beyond from 1992 to 2016. Some of the music on this album is also on the Do It Ourselves Culture release.

A bunch of tracks on The Tipping Point were made to jam with a band active around 2010-2013 in Sydney called 'The Sample Minds' with Sid Sidlow on guitar and Pumps on drums. In this band I created an instrument called the Mash Axe, an Abelson controller designed to take my eyes away from the laptop screen and rock out to the music in a live situation. The influences in the Sample Minds era was electro post punk, techno, dub and space rock, these influences also can he heard in the Mashy P tracks in this collection.

In 2012-2014 my partner Sarah and I were blessed with the birth of 2 wonderful sons, Hamish and Eamon, they appear in a couple of tracks on the album, Also appearing on it is a good friend of mine Charlie McMahon, a man who has truly embraced the idea of de colonialism, dedicating his life to involving himself in indigenous culture. His didjeribone instrument he invented is a mutation of the traditional didjeridoo his playing has influenced many, Charlie has supported many underground initiatives and protests over the years playing music and interacting with Aboriginal Australia as well as Rock and Electronic music counter culture from Sydney to the top end for decades.

Other tracks on this comp chart my musical output from about 2014-2016. electro, techno, experimental, bass heavy and acid/agit house are all in the mix. Social and Environmental justice are a theme in the voice samples which throws back to 1990's electronic music bands I was involved with like Non Bossy Posse and Organarchy Sound System.

I chose the title The Tipping Point because I believe we are approaching such a point with the current crisis of our system of government, information, truth and justice. Its been wrong for so long, and the 1% billionaires are determined to destroy the planet before sharing their wealth. The new rise of the right, the islamophobia and racist attitudes are a symptom of decay of the old paradigms. Ever since world powers went around the world plundering and taking lands injustice has been endemic, as the industrial revolution turned, a dualistic master/slave society has developed. Music counter culture from Folk to Hippy to Punk, Hip Hop, Rave and Reggae has brought people together to challenged the mainstream but still the powers that be have taken us to the edge of oblivion with their blind greed, sexism, racism and war mongering. Recently From Pauline Hanson to Brexit and Trump, ignorance and fear have risen even more as the divide and rule earth destroying system marches on. It tries to hide its increasingly obvious self serving elite pillars of power by encouraging conflict between progressive left and the working class poor in order to keep their control and privilege.
Australia after it was invaded was settled by many people but the Aboriginal people have never seen justice, The notion of this land is unsettled, Australia day is a farce that each year becomes increasingly a forum of protest, a time when we see the ugly racism that exists in this country. Hope lies in a proper treaty and engaging in a process of decolonisation, so the indigenous people are respected and can lead the way in healing the people and the land. The U.S.A has many parallels with Australia, it needs to decolonise as well. All around the world we need to listen to the indigenous wisdom to find a new but old way to manage humanities pressing issues.
Australia is run by coal hearted country killers in the form of mining companies, land gets trashed, left as moonscapes while alternative energy is defunded and demonised. Luckily there is a big movement of concerned citizens, the stakes are high but we must overcome.
This current System cannot go on, we need to take a deep breath, unite the progressive massive and reclaim the future, small and giant protests, parties and uprisings are crucial, I believe they are a catalyst for change and offer a friendly forum and common ground for people to come together and forge a new post capitalist way.
Stay tuned while I populate this page with The Tipping Point album
